Before upgrading a mic, changing your cover art, or rebuilding your format, try making a one-page “listener map.” It can keep creative decisions from turning into gear-shopping fog.
Include:
1. Who the show is for: not just demographics, but what they are trying to solve, feel, learn, or escape.
2. What promise each episode makes: “You’ll leave with a usable tip,” “You’ll hear a thoughtful conversation,” “You’ll feel less alone,” etc.
3. Where they listen: commute, chores, gym, desk, bedtime. This affects pacing, length, recap style, and sound design.
4. What would make them come back: clarity, humor, strong segments, guest chemistry, practical takeaways, community involvement.
5. What would make them stop listening: rambling intros, inconsistent audio, vague titles, too many inside jokes, no clear payoff.
Tiny challenge: before your next recording, write one sentence that starts, “This episode is for someone who…” What does yours say?
