One show-idea exercise I like: instead of starting with a topic, start with a constraint. The limitation becomes the engine.
A few examples:
• Every episode must include one voice memo recorded outside.
• The guest can only answer in stories, not advice.
• Each episode starts with a wrong assumption and ends by correcting it.
• The host has to explain the topic using a metaphor from cooking, sports, or weather.
• The episode is built around one question asked to three very different people.
• The final five minutes must be a practical “try this today” segment.
Constraints can make a show feel more memorable because listeners quickly understand the shape of it. They also help hosts avoid the dreaded blank-page fog.
If you were designing a podcast, video series, or livestream around one creative constraint, what rule would you give yourself?
