Iโve been thinking about cold opens in podcasts โ that little teaser, dramatic quote, funny moment, or โwait, what did they just say?โ clip before the intro music kicks in. When done well, it can pull listeners in instantly. When done badly, it feels like the audio equivalent of a pop-up ad wearing headphones.
Some shows start with a polished intro and theme music. Others jump straight into conversation. True crime and storytelling podcasts often use cold opens beautifully, while casual chat shows can sometimes make them feel a bit forced. The technology gremlins are at it again, but this time theyโre editing WAV files at 2am.
Do you think a cold open makes a podcast more engaging, or do you prefer shows that get straight to the main content?
